8 reliable tips to turn your wine tasting into an epic fail.
Once upon a time, wine tastings were something accessible only to professionals (sommeliers, journalists, merchants…), but, recently, thanks to the increasing interest in wine that’s growing among consumers, it is much easier to find different events throughout the year opened to the public.
Obviously wine professionals take these occasions very seriously and have a real systematic approach, but as a common wine lover, you don’t need to do that.

I am here to help…just follow my tips and you’ll turn your wine tasting into a smashing experience!
Choose the right outfit
Wine tastings are the ideal place to socialize and, why not, meet a love of your life, so get ready. Put on your most beautiful and painful high heels shoes and go. If after a few glasses your balance will be unstable and you will end up stumbling gracelessly, your knight in shining armor may be there to help you…
Have a coffee or cigarette before tasting wine
Before or during the tasting it’s nice to have a little coffee or cigarette break to have a chat with other people or with your friends. The following drinks will keep that coffee or tobacco taste….uhm, delicious!
Keep your stomach empty
Make sure you are not having any food before attending the event and if there is any food stall at the tasting or if you find crackers or bread-sticks, just avoid them.
An empty stomach is the best way to get totally wasted.
Mix it up!
We all know that mixing alcoholic drinks may get you drunk more quickly. So, don’t waste your time in following a specific tasting order of growing alcoholic content. There’s nothing better than starting with a good gin or whiskey. Your palate will get mixed up and probably somehow burnt by alcohol but you’ll get drunk much faster!
Do not spit
I REPEAT: DO NOT SPIT. Why would you do something that stupid?
Spitting and wasting all that good wine? Drink, as much as you can.
Don’t drink water in between wines. Come on, you are there for wine.
You can have plenty of water when you are back home!
Do not rinse your glass
It really doesn’t make any difference, does it? So if your white wine has mixed up with the last red you had, it’s alright: you can say you have created your own rosé blend!
Start embarrassing conversations
Yes, alcohol has an euphoric effect most of the times and can make people ramble. Take advantage of this and talk to strangers about your life and problems or any nonsense that come to your mind.
I am sure people will love it!
My dear wine friends, I generally think wine tastings open to the public are a great idea…but I have worked at many of them and have seen my good share of embarrassing behaviors.
So let me give you a quick advice: if you really love wine, don’t go to these events to drink as much as you can in 2 hours or so! Even if you are not a professional, take it seriously and drink with moderation if you want to really enjoy what you are tasting.
But if that’s not the case…then now you know what to do!
