9 trending wine hoaxes that are not worth your money

9 trending wine hoaxes that are not worth your money

Being a wine professional and, above all, a wine lover, I often receive wine gadgets or wine related products as a present from friends.

And, I need to admit it: I am always extremely curious about wine accessories, but, often these presents are pretty useless stuff and not even that cheap!

So, at risk of offending some friends, I have decided to give you my top 7 of the trendiest wine products that I find completely pointless, to save you from wasting your money and illusions.

Wine tumblers

For the bargain price of 50$ for 2, these Yeti wine cups function is to keep your wine chilled.

Now, there is a long series of reasons for which you should not invest money on these cups. First, you should drink wine in glass not steel. Second, you should be able to see the colour of your wine. But most important…who drinks so slowly to get the wine warm in the glass? Come on!

Sonic decanter

This product claims that to change the molecular structure of wine through sono-chemistry. Well, most of the changes it claims to provoke (reduction of O2 , pH, volatile acids…) are either useless (volatile acids), unwanted (O2 ) or almost impossible to achieve (pH).

My conclusions: buy a normal glass decanter and open the bottle at least half an hour before serving…it’s going to be much cheaper and more effective.

And if you are still interested in trying some wine tech, download Wine Picker, a free wine app for Android and iOS that will help you choose the best wines.

Wine advents calendar

Seriously? One bottle of wine for each of the 24 days until Christmas?

I understand that Christmas lunch with family may be sometimes difficult to deal with, but I don’t think that getting to the date drunk or on the edge of alcoholism, can be the solution!

The glass tank

This wine glass with reservoir that will refill while drinking, may seem a good idea and an original accessory, but look at it carefully…I don’t think it’d be that easy to drink from it!

Electric wine decanter

I’ll say it straight away. I am not a fan of wine aerators and this electric pump sounds as one of the worst. It claims to oxygenate the wine very quickly, by pumping it up and spitting it down in the glass. It looks like one of the most stupid things I’ve ever seen and I believe it may be really messy as well.

Check my conclusions at point 2!

A cat/dog wine

National Drink Wine With Your Cat Week” has just finished, and I sincerely hope you have not fallen in this little marketing trap. There is nothing “winey” in these products, and your pet will be much happier if you share with it quality time or some toys rather than these expensive drinks.

Slim wine

A low calories wine…sounds interesting for us, real women always on a diet. The lack of information on how the wine is done, though, makes me think that the residual sugars normally present in the wine are removed. In fact, normal wine calories can vary from 70 and 85, while here we are talking of 55 per 100ml glass.

Please note that with sugars, also alcohol, aromas and flavours seem to be lost. So, personally, I’d favour quality over quantity and prefer to fully enjoy a smaller glass of good wine rather than this, while on diet!
