Mulled Wine is Perfect for Winter

Few things are as wonderfully cosy as a warming mug of mulled wine when it’s cold outside. Spicy, sweet with just the right amount of boozy kick, mulled wine practically screams winter and it’s something you can enjoy for as long as the temperature remains low. The best part is that it’s incredibly easy to make.

The tradition of adding spices to wine dates back for centuries. It was practised in ancient Rome, stayed popular throughout the Middle Ages (when it was valued for its medicinal purposes), all the way through to the present day. The exact recipes vary but they all have one thing in common – spices are added to flavour the wine which is then heated to perfection.

How do you make the best mulled wine possible? Start off with a cheap and cheerful bottle of red wine – save your good bottles because you’ll want to appreciate them as they are. Pour your bottle of inexpensive red into a soup pot and add a few sticks of cinnamon, a couple of cloves, and one star anise, plus some fresh lemon and orange peels. Of course, you can customise the ingredients you add to your liking. Next add in a few tablespoons of sugar, depending on how sweet you like your mulled wine. Gently heat it over a low heat, making sure to stir it occasionally. Once it’s hot but before it begins to boil, you can go ahead and serve it.

Mulled wine is delicious with Christmas favourites like mince pie or Christmas pudding, but is equally tasty with strong cheeses, dried fruits, and anything with a touch of Christmas spice flavour.
