The Top Wines to Enjoy During the Heatwave
We’re having a rare summer here in the UK and you should be out taking advantage of the gorgeous weather. For picnics, barbecues, a day at the beach or simply relaxing in the back garden, nothing tops a glass of wine. So let’s talk about wine styles and varieties to sip on during the heatwave.
When it’s hot outside, you want to keep cool and a perfectly chilled glass of wine is just the thing you need. For peak satisfaction and ultimate refreshment, steer clear of full-bodied, oaky whites. The lighter and brighter a wine, the more satisfying once the mercury creeps up over 25 C. Look for citrusy whites like Sauvignon Blanc, Verdejo, unoaked Chardonnay, Vinho Verde, Soave, or Vermentino.
You can also think pink and opt for a glass of rosé. While we may think of Rioja as red country, the region also produces outstanding, richly flavoured rosés, often made from Tempranillo or Garnacha (though you’ll find other varieties used as well). Provence is a classic region for lighter rosés which can have a savoury herbal character, in addition to the fresh summer berry flavours we love so much. You can also look to the New World for inspiration. Both California and Australia made excellent GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) rosés which are full of fruit and tend to be more generous on the palate.
Of course, you can even chill certain red wines. Our favourite reds for keeping cool in the summer are light-bodied Grenache, Gamay, and fruit-forward Pinot Noirs.
Just be sure not to overdo it – remember to slap on some factor 30 and don’t skip the odd glass of water.
